Workshops
2B or Not 2B, That is My Pencil
Instructor: Tom Kerr
Friday, April 27, 7pm to 9pm and Saturday, April 28, 9am to 4pm
Tuition: $75 (Saturday lunch included) Member discount does not apply.
Artist, cartoonist, illustrator, and Williams College Alumni Tom Kerr will
conduct a workshop on the art and career of cartooning. Friday evening's
session will consist of an overview of his work and career and what it takes
to be a professional cartoonist. Saturday's morning session will focus on
the caricature aspect of developing characters and the afternoon would focus
on how to write a cartoon strip, with an emphasis on character development,
story line, and how to sell your cartoon strip.
Tom Kerr spent his early career in Australia at The Melbourne Sun. His first
comic strip, Gastauve, a whimsical cooking cartoon which appeared in the
pages of the Australian Women's Weekly, grew to the point of popularity that
it evolved into a weekly radio spot. Returning to the United States in 1984,
Tom produced his first book, On Your Own, and, to date, has illustrated 18
books, the most recent being A Dad's Guide to Babies. His illustrations have
appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers throughout the United States
including Redbook, Ladies Home Journal, The New York Times, the Philadelphia
Inquirer, The Boston Globe, and World Tennis. Tom has also been drawing
McGruff the Crime Dog for the National Crime Prevention Council in
Washington for several years. For more information on Tom Kerr, see

The Artist Book
Instructor: Melanie Mowinski
Wednesday, 6pm to 8pm, April 25 through May 30
6 sessions Tuition: $123 Members / $145 non-Members
In this multidisciplinary class, students will explore and explode the
boundaries that traditionally define the ancient art of bookmaking. They
will step outside of the formal codex structure and explore the action and
mobility that contemporary structures offer. This course will explore
traditional and contemporary book structures such as the one-page books,
accordions, pamphlets, flag books and others as a mode of expression that is
creative, graphic, sculptural and personal. Materials are included in the
class fee.
Introduction to Oil Painting

foundational skills and knowledge in painting. Topics will include color
mixing, proper use of supplies, mediums and basic brush handling. This class
is beginner friendly and is individual centered; each student will progress
according to their skill. Materials list will be provided.
Translations: Drawing into Painting
Instructor: Merritt Fletcher
Tuesdays, 5:30pm to 7:30pm, April 24 through June 12
Eight sessions Tuition $136 Members / $160 non-Members
This course is dedicated to creating strong figure drawings and then
successfully translating them into tonal under-paintings. Students address
formal issues of creating interesting compositions by studying spatial
structures within paintings. Anatomy is explored in terms of proportion and
geometric/volumetric rendering. Students focus on sensitively describing
light, and learn to view all of the pictorial elements (space, form, color,
and even the models themselves) as the shifting of values. As the figure is
increasingly understood through compositional structure and tonal shifting,
more painterly drawings are created. These drawings then translate into
learning classic "grisaille" or the monochromatic painting often used as an
under-painting. The class culminates in a glazed limited palette figurative
painting based on drawings created from direct observation of the model.
Students should bring 18x24" white or buff paper, vine charcoal, and hb
pencils.
