It should be used for information and comments that are applicable to the list as a whole, and not for personal email. 2. Any hate speech or other harmful language will result in removal from the list. 3. We should try to use the list to plan events, draw opinions, initiate actions, and to have some fun! If you have colleagues, friends or community members who would like to be list members, invite them to join at This is fantastic!!!! Look, a real result from the meeting. His massive installation, ?The Palace at 4 am? began at P.S. 1 in NYC and is now in Hamburg, Germany. He served as chair of Columbia University?s Art program from 2000-2005 and is currently a professor there. *Kessler* was born in Yonkers, NY in 1957. He received a BFA from SUNY Purchase and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. Since then he has exhibited widely in America, Europe and Asia. His recent exhibition at Deitch Projects, titled /Global Village Idiot,/ in the spring of 2004 was his first New York exhibition in ten years. Unlike his earlier works that were mounted on the wall and were often read as animated paintings, his newer works are all floor pieces and in Kessler's words, "insist on their sculpturalness." They are mechanical events to be experienced, not just looked at. His use of surveillance cameras is a new development, reflecting a post 9/11 sensibility, modeling a dystopic reality where life is compromised by a feeling of anxiety, fragility and terror. http://www.jonkessler.com/ From Jason at mediaxpro.com Mon Feb 19 09:05:10 2007 From: Jason at mediaxpro.com (Jason Morin) Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2007 09:05:10 -0500 Subject: [Forum] Open Studios Website Message-ID: Greetings, The planning phase for the website for the North Adams Open Studios is currently underway. Among other things I would like to include information about as many participating artist as possible. This information should include a short bio, a brief explanation of technique, and perhaps some some feelings you would like to share about the Open Studios event. Up to 8 visual examples of your works are welcomed, please .jpg format roughly 800px x 600px. If you have difficulty photographing your work or reprocessing image size please let us know. We also will include a link back to your personal/ portfolio website if you have one. Video interviews for the site are also planned, as I mentioned at the forum on the 13th. These interviews will be centered around the Open Studios event concentrating on the impact this event has on the local community and economy. They will be conducted on an appointment basis. The number of interviews will be limited. If you are interested, please respond as soon as possible so we can schedule appropriately. Please submit all materials as soon as possible. Email is best. Send To: Jason at mediaxpro.com If you do not have access or email capabilities, information may be delivered to: 175 Eagle St. #2 North Adams MA 01247 Thank you for your time and effort. At MediaX Productions, we look forward to working with you on this project. I understand that not all participants for this event are on this mailing list so if someone could be so kind as to print and post in common areas that would be very helpful. Thanks again -Jason M. Two things in response to Jason's query. I enjoyed participating in the first Open Studios and do expect to do so again. But my participation will depend on my access to both wall and table space at 107 Main Street (or its similarly central equivalent) for the event, as I did this fall. My home workspace is to small and inaccessible to serve the Open Spaces purpose. I assume other artists will have similar concerns. Can we assume that nailing down such accommodations will once again be a priority for the OS organizers? Also, I've got a procedural question about this forum. With other listserve's that I participate in, when one hits REPLY, the resulting message is automatically directed to the entire list of participants rather than to the email address of the person (in this case, Jason) who sent the message one is replying to. This did not automatically happen with this email?or at least, there was no evidence that it would happen in the email's TO: field. As a way of eliminating uncertainty, I have manually added a copy to the address we've been given for the Berkshire Artists. Confusingly, the readout of this address, in my iMac's address book as Berkshire Artists Forum, is Kurt's Kolok Gallery. This leaves me less than certain that this message will be shared with the entire listserv by virtue of either email address, or that private email I might send to Jason or Kurt will NOT be sent to the entire listserv. It's possible that my computer is handling these emails idiosyncratically. But if others have the same experience, shouldn't the process be clarified so that when one replies to email with a subject line beginning with [Forum], the reply will be clearly directed to the Forum and not to an individual? How one does this is beyond my area of geekish competence, but I assume there are standard ways to setting things up that way, since other online forums do so. Just a suggestion. My apologies if this message arrives in everyone's email inboxes twice as a result of my uncertainty. My guess is that your computer/email program has for some reason labeled the forum as "Kurt Kolok"...not sure why. Although my name is shown beside the email address, the actual email address is "forum at berkshirevisualarts.org". I have worked with list serves for my "day job" for the last 4 years and am unaware of the capability of hitting "reply" vs. "reply all" for the response to go to the entire list. I'd suggest (and believe it is required) that "reply all" is the best method for us to use here. Typically a simple "reply" will only send to the person who sent the email you're responding to. Joshua--is this list set up to accept emails from non-list members or are emails only posting if sent by someone actually on the list serve? Kurt Howard Cruse wrote: > Hi. Mark the dates on your calendar - the 2007 North Adams Open Studios will be held the weekend of Oct. 13th and 14th. Once again, it will be a city-wide event with art being shown at multiple sites. Last year's event was a wonderful success, with more than 500 visitors, support from the city and some local businesses, and lots of good press. So much of that success was due to the efforts of Jane Hudson and Diane Sullivan. Unfortunately, they've both got other commitments this year and won't be on the organizing committee again. So, please step forward if you're interested in being on our new committee to make the 2007 Open Studios another exciting art-filled weekend. We've got 8 months to pull it together. Last year's experience taught us a lot and should help things go smoothly this year. And of course, new ideas and improvements are welcome. I'd like to get an organizing committee together of at least 10 or 12, with each person having a reasonable amount of work. This committee will be defining the event, registering artists, planning the sites, planning the budget, etc. during the next two months. Please let me know if you'd like to be on the committee. Thanks a lot. -Sharon Carson Eclipse Mill Artist Lofts -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <45E1D0E1.7020007@kolokgallery.com> At the recent North Adams "Arts Forum" meeting some general concerns and needs were raised at a somewhat high level including the list below (feel free to add to this list): I think it's important that we capture comments from any and all on this list about what we all see as specific "needs" to add as sub-bullets to the topics below or as additional topics to flesh out. I'd suggest that we use this initial round of discussion to outline the needs specifically before we begin talking about possible solutions or means of achieving the desired result. I'll gladly compile all of this feedback into a single document which I'll then forward to the list so we may begin discussing how we might address these and what specific actions we can take to achieve our desired goal. Please add your topic and any sub-bullets for either your own topic or any others raised on this thread to the list I've started below. This exercise is meant to literally record any and all needs seen by any member of this list and I would encourage each of you to add your own thoughts and also to add on to others' ideas as you see new ideas/concerns being raised. We may have some solutions already in motion (Berkshire Cultural Resource Center for example), but it will certainly help to voice all of our concerns/needs/wishes. I've started us off with the following topics and a few bullets as I see them. Create a social network of arts folks in the area --need to know who makes up our local arts community and what they bring to the table --need to create a strong bond between the arts community members and the members of the North Adams community as a whole --need to help make this "new" arts movement a fun thing for North Adams--not something to fear or dread --need to add energy to our ideas and goals --need to create a strong network for collaboration, referral, and overall support of each other's livelihoods --need to create a network of volunteer and non-volunteer talents for pulling together activities and events Making sure the NA arts community's voices are represented within local government Creating a shared vision of what we would all like to see in a successful, supportive, collaborative environment while making room for independent views and goals --need to corral all of our strengths, talents and ideas into a strong, respected voice in the North Adams community --need to avoid duplication in efforts and turn ideas into action Looking to our successes and shortcomings in order to learn how we can make various events even more successful and engaging --need to make each event easier and easier to pull off by avoiding ineffective measures and mistakes --need to capitalize on what we know works and continually build and expand our vision and goals Building/implementing a support system and tools for those in the local arts community --need to create a strong network for collaboration, referral, and overall support of each other's livelihoods --need to create a network of volunteer and non-volunteer talents for pulling together activities and events --need to offer resources to area artists and art businesses Regards, Kurt -- Kurt Kolok Owner/Director Kolok Gallery 121 Union Street, 1e North Adams, MA 01247 +1 413 664 7381 kurt at kolokgallery.com www.kolokgallery.com From joshua at joshuafield.com Mon Feb 26 14:34:05 2007 From: joshua at joshuafield.com (Joshua Field) Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 14:34:05 -0500 Subject: [Forum] Let's kick off some discussion - What does the North Adams arts community need? From: Zhee Singer Reply-To: If it is in fact the collective desire to make North Adams and the artists who are here a vital community and a "destination" towards generating cash flow - it remains our opinion that we need a definitive implementable business plan. The critical component, i.e. common denominator of all business success includes multiple methods, strategies and tactics for dynamic lead generation towards mind-share or branding. In order to facilitate this venture there must be a dedicated group with clear intentions who develop ideas and implementable systems towards this end. Mia & Zhee Singer at StudioWorks remain willing to participate in such a group. Please contact us if you are like-minded. To that end, I'll put up my email address, and ask that interested parties contact me. Soon I'll be putting up a descriptive website to document the progress of the documentary. When it is completed, I'll send it out to Access TV centers, YouTube, and seek other forms of distribution. I see the project as being a document of the current disposition of the arts in our area.
